The Universal Access Point - Using SharePoint to access all of the information in your enterprise - Rethinking SharePoint

The good news is that many organizations already own and are familiar with a technology platform that can host their UAP—SharePoint. From the author’s viewpoint, SharePoint is the most broadly misapplied application in history. Given it’s centrality in the Microsoft business technology stack, it could have been used as an integration platform from the beginning, but in most organizations SharePoint is used to create hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of new buckets. A CTO for a large organization asked me—“We bought SharePoint because we couldn’t tolerate the problems associated with having almost 3,000 file shares.

Now we have over 30,000 team sites—and we still have most of the file shares. How is that better?”
SharePoint can be more than a large document repository and thousands of team sites. The capabilities we have outlined above are available today by combining the Office Server System and tools from Microsoft ISV partners. So that leaves you with the question—will we use SharePoint to create a Universal Access Point or thousands of new buckets?
